Practical information:
Its origin dates back to 1057. When Prince Spytihnev II founded around 1057 The collegiate chapter at the church of St. Stephen, it was probably already a stone church, because the charter refers to it as a basilica. The Romanesque church, which was later rebuilt in Gothic style in the 14th century, was demolished in 1662-64. Immediately afterwards, the present cathedral was built in the early Baroque style in the years 1664-68 by a builder of Italian origin. Domenico Orsi and probably Giulio Broggio also took part in the construction.
From the outside it looks like a three-aisled basilica, but inside there is a single space with three through chapels on both sides that open in an arcade into the nave.
The cathedral is 50 meters long, 20.50 meters high and 22 meters wide in the nave and chapels. The facade was designed with two towers and these were brought down to the height of the main cornice and imperceptibly incorporated into the prospect of the facade.
