The gallery was founded in January 1956, the art collection was opened to the public two years later - on 9 May 1958. Gallery presents art works from the 13th century to the present - mostly of Czech origin. The works are divided according to the period to separate halls - Hall of Gothic, Renaissance Hall, Baroque Hall, 19th century art hall and a space for temporary exhibitions.
